AIDSfreeAFRICA's 2011 success stories:

We are celebrating 2011, the year large scale solid oral tablet drug production started in Cameroon. The companies are owned and run by Cameroonians. We are honored to be invited to contribute to their endeavor.

AIDSfreeAFRICA receives NGO (non-profit) status in Cameroon and meets high level government officials.

Jan. 2011 Minister of Public Health signs "Letter of Collaboration".

In this letter he succinctly summarizes AIDSfreeAFRICA's work:

1. Support Cameroonians to locally produce drugs;

2011 Check  : Providing crucial quality control equipment. (see below)

2. Improve drug access;

2011 Check  : Expanded revolving drug programs in Limbe and Esu.

3. Train locals and pharmaceutical personnel;

2011 Check  : Trained 6 volunteers to conduct AIDS testing in Esu.

          Negotiations for pharmaceutical (GMP) training are under way.

4. Identify and provide skilled human resources from abroad to villages and local pharmaceutical companies on voluntary basis;

2011 Check  : Send medical doctor currently volunteering in Esu.

5. Encourage the twinning of US pharmaceutical companies and those of Cameroon;

2011 Check   : Students 2 Science donates $1/4 million worth of equipment.

6. Encourage the twinning of US Universities and those of Cameroon for scientific research.

Sending production, quality control equipment to Cameroon :

In a blog of the American Chemical Society, editor Linda Wang raises the question: Can A Pasta King Bring Generic Drugs To Sub-Saharan Africa?

The resounding answer is YES. see blog.

In June AIDSfreeAFRICA promised to find equipment that would help with certain bottlenecks, specifically in quality control.

In November AIDSfreeAFRICA obtained Pharmaceutical Laboratory equipment - to be precise, one Agilent 1100 HPLC, and 2 Perkin Elmer HPLC's plus spare parts, also a Mettler PR5002 lab balance (scale), Sorvall RT 6000 that is a chilled centrifuge, Buchi Rotorvap. Cinpharm paid for the transport and will donate drugs and IV fluids from their in house productions for AIDSfreeAFRICA's revolving drug funds.

How long will it take that Cameroonian Women play in a World Soccer tournament? "Kick it to Cameroon"

Recently I asked my seven year old girl what she would like me to bring her. She said without hesitation: "a soccer ball." I came back with seven balls and me kicking it around in every village I visited. Collecting soccer related items really took off with the creation of "Kick it to Cameroon" campaign AIDSfreeAFRICA volunteer Delia Cintron. Volunteers Betty Lewis and David McKay Wilson collected over 80 soccer balls, 58 cleats, over 100 jerseys many never used, gloves, shin protectors, and more. The soccer balls made great buffers when they were stuffed into the gaps between the machines in our crates containing the production equipment.

This project just started: 88 soccer balls, 58 soccer shoes, 100+ jerseys. More to come.

Investment in revolving drug fund increases patient treatments

Definition: Donation of $2000 buys drugs, test kits and reagents to stock a rule village clinic. Doctor or nurse can now make the diagnosis and sell appropriate medicine for the patient to recuperate and in some cases to stay alive. The clinic returns money to the revolving drug fund in small installments. With this money AIDSfreeAFRICA buys a new medicine, test kits and reagents, thus creating a revolving mechanism of buying drugs and treating patients that is self sustainable and creates an income that can be used to improve hospital services.

A House of One's Own

HRH Fon Albert of Esu gives AIDSfreeAFRICA 3.2 acres of land as a gift so we can carry out our projects. For 2012 we intent to build a multi purpose community center with several apartments for volunteers, office space for the MD doctor to treat patients, meeting room for the community to gather, such as the Women Empowerment Center, the Esu Family Health Association (a growing group of people affected or infected with HIV/AIDS), the Esu Youth Association, and all equipment we already gathered. Plus hopefully computer/internet access stations.

Why Charity alone is not the answer?

"Poor people seek dignity, not dependence. Traditional charity often meets immediate needs but too often fails to enable people to solve their own problems over the long term. Market-based approaches have the potential to grow when charitable dollars run out, and they must be a part of the solution to the big problem of poverty."  Quote from Acumen Foundations web site.

"Free" is not free, it squelches initiatives, it encourages people to stay poor in order to receive more "free" handouts. The cost is prosperity.

AIDSfreeAFRICA is designed to turn your donations into incentives for people to grow, to be in charge, to take risk, to create jobs and to create infrastructures that last.

Mission: AIDSfreeAFRICA is a community of professionals dedicated to empower Africans to be come self-sufficient in producing pharmaceuticals.

The Vision of AIDSfreeAFRICA is: Africa free of HIV/AIDS, to provide the world with the capacity to produce lifesaving drugs is an expression of our commitment to peace, health and human dignity.  read more
